Band

In recent years, Random Lake School District’s band program has grown from just another elective into a thriving hub of student participation, passion, and success. The band program has experienced significant growth and success, thanks to the efforts of band teacher Branden Mueller. With a drastic increase in student enrollment, over 35% of high school students will be in band for the 2025-2026 school year. The program continues to flourish with a thriving culture of enthusiasm for music.

Mueller attributes the growth to a seven-year journey of creating excitement and shifting the program’s culture. “I try to create a fun environment where students see the worth in joining band,” he explained. By celebrating small successes and focusing on incremental growth, Mueller has built a foundation of trust. His motto, “trust the process,” emphasizes patience and progress.

Building strong relationships with students is another cornerstone of Mueller’s approach. “I show interest in them as individuals and make sure they know they have value,” he said. Mueller also fosters an environment where students feel supported in balancing their other commitments, rather than penalized for their involvement in other activities. This relational approach has helped the band program maintain a remarkable 100% retention rate for students from 8th grade to high school.

The program’s new band room has also played a role in its success. The facility allows for more focused instruction tailored to specific grade levels. “We’re able to give students the attention they deserve,” Mueller said. The addition of new equipment, made possible through community donations and the Krier Foundation, has further enhanced the program’s quality.

Beyond the classroom, the band program offers students unique opportunities, such as performing at Walt Disney World every two years. Most recently, the choir and band students performed in front of hundreds of people in Florida. Next year, the marching band will be marching in the Magic Kingdom, providing yet another memorable experience for Random Lake musicians.

The band program continues to impress, bringing energy to concerts and a strong sense of community among students. District Administrator Michael Trimberger praised the program’s growth and the dedication behind it. “Branden Mueller has truly transformed the brand program at Random Lake. His ability to connect with students and create a thriving culture of music is something we are incredibly proud of. He goes above and beyond to invest in their success, both in and out of the classroom.”

Looking ahead, Mueller is focused on maintaining a high-quality program that emphasizes diverse musical styles and student involvement. “I want kids to be involved and enjoy coming to band class,” he said. His ultimate goal is to give students the tools they need to succeed not just in music, but in all aspects of life.

The Random Lake band program embodies ‘the Random Lake advantage’—a commitment to student growth, opportunity, and excellence. With strong student participation, a supportive environment, and unique performance experiences, the program continues to thrive. Mueller’s dedication to investing in each student ensures that music will remain a valued and inspiring part of the school community for years to come.
